James Stuart "Jim" Gilmore III was born on October 6, 1949 in Richmond, VA and is an American politician who was the 68th Governor of Virginia from 1998 to 2002. He announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the 2016 presidential election.
Jim Gilmore graduated John Randolph Tucker High School an received an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1971. He enlisted in the United States Army after attending college. He worked in the 650th Military Intelligence Group from 1971 to 1974. He graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in 1977. He was elected Commonwealth's Attorney in Henrico County in 1987 and 1991 and, was then elected Attorney General in 1993. He resigned in 1997 to run for Governor.
He was Governor for 1 term and became the Chairman of the Republican National Committee from 2001 to 2002. He officially ran for president in 2007. Gilmore said he represented "the Republican wing of the Republican Party" in the race for the 2008 Presidential nomination. On July 7, 2015, Gilmore told the Associated Press that he planned to announce his candidacy for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination in the first week of August 2015. On July 29th, Gilmore filed his candidacy for President of the United States
